About Us
The Institute of Material Science and Sustainability is the premier high school sustainability research incubator, based in New York City and supported by global academic institutions. Since our inception in 2025, we have been dedicated to nurturing innovative research and empowering the next generation of sustainability leaders. With over 10 projects mentored and $20,000 raised in funding, IMSS has established itself as a leader in sustainability research education, supported by partnerships with institutions like Columbia and Duke University.
Unlike other programs that offer general mentorship or prioritize quantity over quality, we stay true to our mission: working with a select group of passionate high schoolers and dedicating ourselves to their growth. Every three months, we choose 10 standout research proposals from a competitive pool of applicants. These teams embark on an intense three-month journey where they receive hands-on mentorship, personalized guidance from world-class professors, and access to funding to carry out their research effectively.
At IMSS, we focus on fostering groundbreaking sustainability research by identifying innovative ideas, providing tailored mentorship, and connecting students to global initiatives and networks. We are more than just mentors; we are partners in the journey of turning ideas into impactful projects that address the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges.
